Sahiyo Awards and Distinctions

Since our founding in 2015, Sahiyo has been the recipient of numerous recognitions and honors both collectively as an organization, and individually as team members of the organization.

2021

  • Catherine Cox was awarded $4000 from The Passionate Leaders Project (PLP) for her internship as Programs Intern at Sahiyo and to carry out her project, titled “The Silent Pandemic: Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Gender-Based Violence in the United States.”

2020


2019

  • Sahiyo and StoryCenter awarded recipient of the ViiV Healthcare #EndFGM Positive Action Challenge awards. The #ENDFGM Positive Action Challenge supports innovative interventions to bring about a sustained change in attitudes and social norms towards ending FGC.

2018

  • Sahiyo recognized by Population Reference Bureau as one of six inspiring organizations working on ending FGM/C
  • Aarefa Johari and Aysha Mahmood won the Laadli Media and Advertising Award for Gender Sensitivity, 2018 for their investigation revealing the prevalence of FGC in Kerala.
  • The Muslim American Leadership Alliance (MALA) honored Mariya Taher with the inaugural Human Rights Storyteller Award in recognition Mariya and Sahiyo’s innovative approach to defending human rights through storytelling.
  • Insia Dariwala and Aarefa Johari won the ShoorVeer Awards 2018 in Mumbai. The awards, given by the organisation ample mission were instituted to honour the bravery and courage of “common men and women who have done uncommon things”
  • Global Woman Peace Foundation awarded Sahiyo’s Maria Akhter with the Student Ambassador Award for her work on FGC.

2017

  • Insia Dariwala received the prestigious Women Have Wings Courage Award in 2017, for her incredible advocacy work to end Female Genital Cutting and bring attention to all forms of child abuse through the Visual Medium and Art. This award was instituted in 2012 to honour “women of courage who have taken bold risks to ensure a more just and peaceful future for us all”, and has been awarded to 31 women around the world so far.

  • Mariya Ali was awarded the Laadli Media Award for Gender Sensitivity for her essay on her personal experience with FGC

  • Mariya Taher was recognized by The Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation and awarded with the Survivor Activist Award.

  • Mariya Taher was awarded the Engendering Progress award by The Manhattan Young Democrats 

  • Nari Smata Manch recognized ‘Sahiyo’ with the ‘Daughter of Maharashtra’ Award for our contributions to build a dialogue around FGC

  • Sahiyo awarded The International Association of Women in Radio and Television grant award: to conduct a media training workshop in Mumbai
