In this political climate with increased racism and sexism, diminishing human rights, restricted healthcare access and ongoing global migration, understanding FGM/C is critical. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills to provide culturally competent, trauma-informed care for individuals affected by FGM/C. Dr. Johnson-Agbakwu will explore its historical and socio-cultural context, health impacts, and legal and ethical considerations for promoting healing and equity.

Dr. Crista Johnson-Agbakwu is the Executive Director of the Collaborative in Health Equity at UMass T.H. Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health. A renowned OB/GYN and researcher, she specializes in sexual and reproductive health equity for migrant women, with a focus on FGM/C and gender-based violence. She has advised the CDC and WHO and has led efforts to improve culturally competent care for refugee communities. Dr. Johnson-Agbakwu has received numerous national awards for her contributions to medical education, humanism, and global health.
