Description: An informational briefing to Connecticut legislators and their staff ahead of the 2026 Legislative Session. The briefing will provide background information on FGM/C as a human rights violation, its prevalence in Connecticut, and the need to pass a comprehensive state-level law to adequately address the harmful practice. Advocating since 2020, survivor advocates, members of the CT Coalition to End FGM/C, and legislative champions will again present evidence-based data, share lived experiences, and outline the specific legal and policy gaps that leave girls in the state unprotected.
Objectives / Expected Outcomes:
- Provide background information on FGM/C, including its prevalence, implications, and the US’ human rights obligations to address it;
- Highlight the urgent need for Connecticut to pass a comprehensive law against FGM/C in the state;
- Clarify how state level laws complement federal protections, and are necessary to protect local communities and prevent the harmful practice;
- Build understanding and commitment among legislative champions ahead of the 2026 session, and lay the groundwork for bipartisan sponsorship and active support of a bill;
- Answer frequently asked questions and dispel myths surrounding FGM/C and those who are impacted by it.
