Sahiyo’s Bhaiyo: Male Allies program is growing, and we are currently looking for interns and volunteers to join us in advancing conversations around female genital cutting (FGC) and male allyship. To apply, join our Bhaiyo volunteer group or apply for an internship today!

Bhaiyo, meaning “male friends” or “brothers” in Bohra Gujarati, provides a space for men and male-identifying individuals to learn about FGC, raise awareness, support survivors and become active allies in Sahiyo’s aim to end FGC. 

Join Bhaiyo as an Intern

We are currently seeking an individual who can commit approximately 10 hours per week for six months. The internship is unpaid and remote. Upon successful completion of the internship, interns will receive a letter of recommendation from Sahiyo.

The Bhaiyo intern will work alongside Sahiyo staff and Advisory Board members to support the program’s day-to-day activities. Responsibilities include:

• Supporting Sahiyo staff and Advisory Board members with the day-to-day functions of Bhaiyo
• Recruiting and interviewing new Bhaiyo members
• Researching topics for Bhaiyo webinars, discussions, and panels
• Supporting communications around male engagement in gender-based violence work and Bhaiyo programming
• Promoting Bhaiyo programming across Sahiyo’s various communication platforms

We’re looking for someone with excellent written and verbal communication skills who is organized, dependable, creative, and comfortable working independently while staying connected with a team. Cultural awareness and sensitivity are key to this role, as is an eagerness to learn about FGC and engage with communities in a culturally appropriate and thoughtful manner.

Volunteer with Bhaiyo

We are also looking for volunteers interested in supporting Bhaiyo and its work to engage men in ending FGC. Volunteers play an important role in helping us grow the program and its reach.

Depending on your interests, skills, and availability, you may be able to contribute to areas such as outreach, research, communications, events, and other Bhaiyo programming.

Why Get Involved?

Bhaiyo is rooted in the belief that men can play an important role in creating change around FGC, including through conversations and actions within their own families and communities. As Bhaiyo intern Noor Ul Sabah reflected in a recent blog post:

“It may begin quietly. A father telling relatives that his daughter will not undergo FGC…a husband asking his partner whether they have ever spoken honestly about the issue. A brother challenging misinformation when it is repeated casually. These are not dramatic actions, but they matter. In fact, change often begins in these small and deeply personal moments, long before it becomes visible at the community level.”

Getting involved with Bhaiyo means helping to create more opportunities for those conversations to take place. As Bhaiyo member Murtaza Kapasi explains:

“Bhaiyo allows men to have open and honest conversations about a topic they may or may not know but should be important to them. As brothers, it’s our collective responsibility to leave the world safer than we found it for those that we love. Bhaiyo aims to raise awareness to help advocates and survivors working to end FGC today.”
