The Americas Alliance to Participate in IACHR Public Hearings on FGC in the Americas

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has announced the public hearings schedule for its 194th Period of Sessions, to be held from November 17 to 21, 2025, at the University of Miami. Over the course of the week, the IACHR will hold 19 public hearings addressing the human rights situation in 14 countries and at the regional level across the Americas. The hearings will bring together representatives of States, civil society organizations, petitioners from across the Americas, and United Nations experts.

The Americas Alliance to End FGM/C, of which Sahiyo is a member, will be attending the Regional: Status of female genital mutilation practices hearing, which takes place on November 17th from 2:00 – 3:30 PM. Sahiyo Executive Director and Co-founder, Mairya Taher, will be speaking on the panel as a representative of the Americas Alliance. The hearing is open to the public, both in-person and virtually. The America’s Alliance is a coalition of organizations, including Sahiyo, The U.S. End FGM/C Network, End FGM Canada Network, George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, Equality Now, Sanctuary for Families, and Global Girls WorldWide Women which seeks to brings together, governments, researchers, activists, and survivor advocacy groups dedicated to ending female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) across the Americas.

FGM/C is a global issue that affects over 230 million women and girls. However, it has just been in the last 30 years that FGM/C occurrences in the Americas have been gaining attention. This event will be a chance to shed light on this critical issue and hear from experts on what they think the best solutions are for resolving FGM/C in the region.
