A coalition of leading organizations, including Sahiyo, The U.S. End FGM/C Network, End FGM Canada Network, George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, and Equality Now, has come together to launch the Americas Alliance to End FGM/C. This new coalition brings together organizations, governments, researchers, activists, and survivor advocacy groups dedicated to ending female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) across the Americas.
Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) has long been a global issue, affecting women and girls in various communities worldwide. However, it was not until the 1990s that the prevalence and impact of FGM/C began to be recognized within North America. Within South America, FGM/C gained attention in 2007, particularly in Colombia. These instances of recognition were slow and fragmented, leading to significant gaps in understanding, support, and action against FGM/C within the continents.
This roundtable webinar will:
- Introduce the Americas Alliance and the impetus for creating the coalition
- Discuss recent pushbacks in the United States and attempts to co-opt the issue of FGM/C
- Highlight the recent research on FGM/C in Canada
- Share progress on the bill towards prohibiting FGM/C in Colombia
- Build collaboration between activists and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) interested in the issue of FGM/C across the Americas, and to hear their perspectives
Don’t miss this important conversation. Together, we can build a coordinated, survivor-centered movement to end FGM/C in the Americas.
