From February 13–15, 2026, Sahiyo hosted its 10th annual Activists Retreat, bringing together seven participants for a weekend of learning, reflection, and strategic planning to address female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). The retreat created a safe and private space for activists interested in ending FGM/C to connect with one another, deepen their understanding of the issue, and strengthen their advocacy efforts.
Retreat attendees took part in educational workshops, self-care sessions and had several opportunities to engage in conversations about the work needed to address FGM/C within South Asian Bohra communities. Guest speaker, activist and author Farzana Doctor facilitated a self-care session on somatic healing techniques to address burnout and help participants practice healthy coping mechanisms while engaging in difficult advocacy work to end FGM/C. Additionally, a presentation on the legal landscape involving addressing FGM/C in the United States provided important context on current laws and policy efforts in the U.S related to prevention and protection.
At the end of the retreat, attendees participated in a planning session to reflect on their advocacy goals moving forward and to identify ways to remain connected with Sahiyo’s efforts in building community awareness around FGM/C. The retreat offered a collaborative and safe space for participants to share ideas, strengthen networks, and explore opportunities to continue contributing to Sahiyo’s mission to prevent FGM/C amongst future generations and support survivors.
